Working Out The Weight
A common question here in the Estimating department, is how much a leaflet or brochure would weigh. This information is useful to you if you are working out postal or delivery costs.
So, here we are, a quick guide to “Working Out The Weight”
The Formula – (Dimension X / 1000) x (Dimension Y / 1000) x grammage x leaves
Example – A4 Leaflet on 150gsm
- Dimension X = 210mm (210 / 1000 = 0.210)
- Dimension Y = 297mm (297 / 1000 = 0.297)
- Grammage = 150
- Leaves = 1
So the formula looks something like this :-
0.210 x 0.297 x 150 x 1 = 9.3555 (or 9.36grams)
There will be a negligable addidtion to this for things like ink or laminates, so if you were to say the leaflet would weigh no more than 9.50grams – you would be fine with this.
Next up we have a brochure.
Example – 40pp A5 self cover brochure on a 170gsm
The clarification is that the outside front cover is page 1, the inside front cover is page 2, the inside back cover is page 39 and the outside back cover is page 40.
- Dimension X = 148 (148 / 1000 = 0.148)
- Dimension Y = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)
- Grammage = 170
- Leaves = 20 (the leaves value is equal to half of the pages value – page 1 and 2 are effectively the same, as are 3 & 4, etc)
So the formula looks something like this :-
0.148 x 0.210 x 170 x 20 = 105.672 (105.67)
Safe to say that the weight of each brochure would be no more than 107 grams
And now we have a final example of a
24 pp A4 Brochure with 250gsm cover and 150gsm text
We’ll split this down into 2 sections – the cover and the text
COVER
- Dimension X = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)
- Dimension Y = 297 (297 / 1000 = 0.297)
- Grammage = 250
- Leaves = 2
0.210 x 0.297 x 250 x 2 = 31.185 (31.19)
and
THE TEXT
- Dimension X = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)
- Dimension Y = 297 (297 / 1000 = 0.297)
- Grammage = 150
- Leaves = 10
0.210 x 0.297 x 150 x 10 = 93.555 (93.56)
So the Cover weighs 31.19 grams and the Text weighs 93.56 grams, giving us a total of 124.75 grams.
Safe to say that the weight of each brochure would be no more than 127 grams
And that’s it, if you have any questions, please add a comment to the bottom of the post and I’ll try and answer it as quickly as possible.
