We’ve just had the nod, from the powers that be, that we will be sponsoring the print again for Think Visibility 4. For those of you that wondering what Think Visibility is, it isn’t anything to do with flourescent hi-vis jackets, more a series of conferences “covering the things that usually get left behind in the web design process”.

We’ve attended the last two conferences and sponsored the booklet printing at Think Vis 3 – and we’re keen to not only help Dom and the team out again, but to show you what we can do for you in relation to printing.

We can tell you that this time round, there will be another booklet – but the rest of the print, it’s going to be a suprise. If you really want to know what we’ll be producing, then you’ll have to get yourself down to the conference. There are a few tickets left, so don’t hang around – get over to the Think Visibility site and book them today.

…Being a responsible printer means considering the impact of our manufacturing process on the environment.

Alcohol Free
The use of alcohol in litho printing has been common practise for more than 30 years, it stabilises the water/ink balance and makes printing more forgiving, however, alcohol is a volatile organic compound (VOC) which reacts vigorously with oxygen in the air and in high concentrations can cause illness in print colleagues as well as a risk of fire/explosion – in a nutshell its not very environmentally friendly. That’s why 2 years ago we took the decision to go ALCOHOL FREE, on our new Komori LS526, as we believed it was the right thing to do for our working environment and it something that minimises the impact on the bigger picture. Alcohol free needs everyone to engage, printers and minders need high levels of maintenance and good hygiene. This will reduce costs and result in brighter, cleaner colours with better contrasts improving quality, which is good for everyone.

FSC Sourced Paper
Forest Stewardship Council is an internationally recognised standard, working to protect the worlds forests and indigenous people that inhabit them. Paper and all wood products can be FSC certified. The key to FSC is a ‘Chain of Custody’ – in other words the traceability of the paper from its origin through to the paper mill, merchant and on to the printer.Using a certified printer like ourselves, you are able to use the tick tree logo on certified stocks for printed matter, communicating your support of the important green issues.

Vegetable Based Inks
Some of the pigment used in conventional printing inks contain harmful metallic substances, these can include lead and mercury. The ink itself is petroleum based and needs alcohol-based solvents, as well as alcohol being an VOC so is petroleum and therefore combined they evaporate emitting health and environment hazards. To us the solution was easy, replace conventional inks with vegetable-based inks and reduce the VOC’s dramatically. Petroleum-based inks emit 25 to 40% VOC when dry and vegetable-based inks are as low as 2 to 3%, creating an essentially nonhazardous substance which better still is derived from renewable energy.

Introducing each of the processes has made a difference and we will continue to look for new areas to improve.

Like it or not, Christmas is just around the corner, 61 days to be exact. The Christmas music is already playing in the shops (Slade has embedded itself into my brain – even at this early stage), the shopping centres and supermarkets bustling with trade – shopping trollies bursting with all the things for the Christmas excess.

One thing people always seem to leave until the last minute though is Christmas Cards. Christmas cards for business in particular. And yet to a business, especially in these economically challenging times, it’s essential. Essential to get your name in front of your customer and not with just with a pre-printed, off the shelf card. The benefits are obvious, you will be maintaining relationships with key customers / suppliers, demonstrating how much their custom / help is appreciated. By putting your logo and personalised message on the card, you are getting brand awareness and the personal touch that you lose when buying off the shelf cards.

ABWellan have a selection of pre-designed cards, if you don’t have time to design one yourself. Just let us know what message you would like, which logo you would like on the card, if you want a unique message for each of your customers / suppliers.

Each card is a 4pp A5, folded on the long edge. The orientation of the card can be landscape or portrait, but the fold will always be on the 210mm edge. We can supply you with envelopes at cost – they won’t be printed, but they will be quality envelopes, 120gsm – not cheap & flimsy. The cards will be printed 4 colour process to throughout, on a 300gsm Silk with a High Gloss Varnish to the outer (if you want it).

So how much is this going to cost? Well, depending on how many you would like, whether you need envelopes and delivery – the costs are as follows :

<col style="width: 83pt;" span="4" width="110"></col>

Quantity

Print

Envelopes

Delivery

25

£35

£1

£10

50

£49

£2

£10

100

£65

£4

£10

I’m sure you will agree, the prices are extremely cheap – but rest assured the quality won’t be. If you would like further details or require something we haven’t mentioned, please give our sales team a call on 01924 473481 and they will be happy to discuss your requirements.

Over the years, I have seen on a number of occasions, people tell us the name of a fold for their leaflet, only for us to understand it as something else. This is nobodys fault, as, if we are told by somebody (usually the boss) that this is the name for something, we take it as correct.

The print industry however, has a set of names for folded leaflets and that is what we are going to list here. Why? Mainly to help people get the correct quote – if we are told that something is roll folded and it comes in as a concertina folded leaflet, it could casue the price to change – especially if the leaflet is on a board.

So here goes :-

The Parallel Folded Leaflet

Today we had our photo taken for the Real Radio website. All week, the staff upstairs have been answering questions on Pete Egerton’s Mid Morning show, in the Take Five Competition on Real Radio. At the moment, ABWellan are top of the leaderborad with 15 points and with only 2 teams left to play this month, are in with a good shout of winning the October competition.

So, they need a photo – good job I brought mine with me. All outside this afternoon and under the ABWellan banner, Everybody Smile, Cheeeeessssseeee – Snap.

ABWellan - 1st Pic

There’s always one who can’t smile. Cheer up Karen

Anyway, the 2nd photo – Everybody Smile, Cheeeeessssseeee – Snap.

ABWellan 2nd Pic

Everybody smiled but Toby forgot to get the AB Banner in.

Time for Dave and the Repro to get to work. Transpose the happy smiley photo onto the one with the banner and the job’s a good ‘un. then it’s time to email it off to Real Radio and everything is sorted.

But Dave just can’t help himself can he !!

Here is the result of his mischief

Mischief

Now after looking at the photo (the one with Toby everywhere), some of the staff look like other people.

Now as a little competition, we would like you to let us know who people now look like. The entry that makes us laugh most will receive £50.00 off their next order.

If you don’t know peoples names, here they are, from left to right

Jim, Terry, Dave, Mick, Lisa, Alan, Simon, Jonathan, Karl, Karen, Ann, Julie

Closing date is 23rd of October 2009.

Have Fun

A common question here in the Estimating department, is how much a leaflet or brochure would weigh. This information is useful to you if you are working out postal or delivery costs.

So, here we are, a quick guide to “Working Out The Weight”

The Formula – (Dimension X / 1000) x (Dimension Y / 1000) x grammage x leaves

Example – A4 Leaflet on 150gsm

Dimension X = 210mm (210 / 1000 = 0.210)

Dimension Y = 297mm (297 / 1000 = 0.297)

Grammage = 150

Leaves = 1

So the formula looks something like this :-

0.210 x 0.297 x 150 x 1 = 9.3555 (or 9.36grams)

There will be a negligable addidtion to this for things like ink or laminates, so if you were to say the leaflet would weigh no more than 9.50grams – you would be fine with this.

Next up we have a brochure.

Example – 40pp A5 self cover brochure on a 170gsm

The clarification is that the outside front cover is page 1, the inside front cover is page 2, the inside back cover is page 39 and the outside back cover is page 40.

Dimension X = 148 (148 / 1000 = 0.148)

Dimension Y = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)

Grammage = 170

Leaves = 20 (the leaves value is equal to half of the pages value – page 1 and 2 are effectively the same, as are 3 & 4, etc)

So the formula looks something like this :-

0.148 x 0.210 x 170 x 20 = 105.672 (105.67)

Safe to say that the weight of each brochure would be no more than 107 grams

And now we have a final example of a

24 pp A4 Brochure with 250gsm cover and 150gsm text

We’ll split this down into 2 sections – the cover and the text

COVER

Dimension X = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)

Dimension Y = 297 (297 / 1000 = 0.297)

Grammage = 250

Leaves = 2

0.210 x 0.297 x 250 x 2 = 31.185 (31.19)

and

THE TEXT

Dimension X = 210 (210 / 1000 = 0.210)

Dimension Y = 297 (297 / 1000 = 0.297)

Grammage = 150

Leaves = 10

0.210 x 0.297 x 150 x 10 = 93.555 (93.56)

So the Cover weighs 31.19 grams and the Text weighs 93.56 grams, giving us a total of 124.75 grams.

Safe to say that the weight of each brochure would be no more than 127 grams

And that’s it, if you have any questions, please add a comment to the bottom of the post and I’ll try and answer it as quickly as possible.

Once again in July the AB Group based in Batley , West Yorkshire and comprising of AB Co Ltd, Wellan Studios and RW Reprographics Ltd helped to sponsor the annual Pudsey 10K in the process earning thousands of pounds for the Marie Curie Care based in Bradford.

Over what is described as an hard and undulating course with local landmarks such as Black Carr Woods and of course the Fox + Grapes part of its charm , a record entry from all over the country enjoyed clement conditions far removed from the Barbecue Summer promised earlier in the year by the weatherman , this much to the relief of Finishing Manger Wayne Ferguson and Lead Printer Paul Worthy who both scorched round the course in under an astonishing 1 Hour to gain the Annual Team Award for AB Co Ltd in the process collecting a trophy , a case of wine and vouchers . We are not sure what the vouchers are for yet but will find out on September 24 at the award ceremony where AB will present their cheque in addition to the sum of nearly £1000 raised by Paul Worthy himself in sponsorship.
